Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
