One Piece Ends a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in January, once the current storyline wraps up, the anime will take a three-month hiatus until spring, when the Elbaph arc begins.

New Release Strategy

From now on, One Piece will release two seasons every annually for a cap of 26 episodes. The studio states this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the universe — incorporating more material, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime had a half-year pause that started in late 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The intermission was for the production team to enhance the visuals and let the comic to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to supply viewers with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although a few summary installments appeared during this season, the positive effects of this updated approach far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. Per the news, this may lead to one episode of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with others instead covering more material or more to make up for time.

It's the end of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to ditch the traditional method of production, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course itself have numerous side stories, and the standard of the art can change drastically between one episode and the following. Today, series creation is structured in cours, with one or two maximum releasing each year, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the original work.
