Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying such drugs should be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
People who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Use
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle support.
