The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.
The ex-president was convicted of plotting a armed takeover in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.
This included trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his flight.
This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
His son wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the magistrate's decision was the chance of the former president's move to embassies near the home, considering that the probes revealed a background of organizing to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, the capital city, is positioned around 13km from his dwelling.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist United States President President Trump, causing him to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will have a custody hearing on the next day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also asked that the former president be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
He was convicted of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the national vote to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plan which included plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the support of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without issue on January 1st, 2023.
But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged official structures in the national capital, Brasília.
The security forces took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and return him to office.
At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 national vote.
