Trump's Progressive Warning Misses The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies pose an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true danger facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a paltry 13.5% growth for the EU. Over this time, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, about half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

The growing disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a vital issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of major factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A US startup can launch a service under a single set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
